Natural latex is a confusing topic
Finding the most natural and the best natural latex mattress for you is a journey to say the least.
You could choose by reading our latex mattress reviews but it’s important to understand what companies offer as far as what latex foam they use.
Here’s what you need to know before buying a natural latex mattress.
What is Natural Latex
Natural latex is a product made from a milky white liquid called hevea milk, derived from the rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis). This milk is processed into a finished product called natural latex foam. The foam is rubbery in nature, has a rubbery odor and is long lasting (durable).
How Natural is Natural Latex?
Most companies claim to have 100% natural latex mattresses. Implying that their mattresses are made entirely of natural latex, the milky liquid from the rubber tree. Very few companies say they have blended latex mattresses.
The fact is that no latex is 100% natural foam or 100% natural latex mattress. Everyone claims to have natural latex mattresses but none are 100% natural, made only from hevea milk.
The process to making natural latex is complex and always includes additives. Anything over 85% natural is classified as 100% natural according to industry suppliers i’ve contacted. Below 85% natural is considered blended latex and then you have synthetic latex which is man-made petroleum based latex foam.
How is Latex Made?
There are 2 ways to process latex. There’s Talalay latex, derived from the Talalay process and you have Dunlop latex which derived form the Dunlop process.
The 2 processes create a very different feeling product. Talalay is soft and Dunlop is usually firmer.
Advantages of the Talalay Latex
Talalay latex is tends to be soft. It’s used for these properties. Soft and comfy your see Talalay latex foam topping most latex mattress, softening the surface for more of a pillow top like feel.
Talalay latex is also very consistent in feel and lasts a very long time.
Advantages of the Dunlop Latex
Dunlop latex tends to be firmer. As it’s firmer you’ll find it as a support later to most latex mattresses. Replacing the springs, Dunlop latex foam provides a very durable support layer. It also contributes to the comfort of latex mattresses since it’s still pressure relieving unlike springs.
Some who prefer a firmer feel will choose an all natural dunlop latex to sleep on and will not top it with Talalay latex.
